Roof Replacement- Preparing For the Cold Days

Roof Replacement- Winter is approaching Oklahoma by hitting temperatures as low as 30 degrees. Walking out to your cars these past couple of mornings have been dreadful. There’s nothing you’d rather not do than scrap off your windows and stand by to let them defrost before taking off. What could be worse this winter?

What could be worse this winter is having roof damage due from ice, snow, and wintery mixes. Although Oklahoma isn’t known for receiving hefty amounts of snowfall, this year could be different.

For this winter season, here are some precautions and measures to consider before the snowfall hits.

Ice Dams

What can create an ice dam within your roof? An ice dam is formed when you don’t monitor or clean out the debris, snow or ice that collects from your gutters or down spouts. If you have a low roof, you can consider using a snow rake to get the majority of heavy snow lifted off from it. Another spot to check is your attic! Your attic should be sufficiently insulated and ventilated that maintains airflow from the soffit area through roof vents to help prevent ice dams.

Ridge Vents

Ridge vents allow the warm air flow from the attic to ventilate out of the home to make sure moisture isn’t building up in there. Newer ridge vents can increase energy efficiency and can prolong the life of your roof installed properly. Snow can become an issue to ridge vents because they can be blocked by drifting snow during the winter season. Most people believe that vents are to help during the summer season to keep heat out, but they are most essential for winter season to control cold weather issues. Various snow layers and ice layers can cover or block ridge vents.

As for roof replacements and roof repair during the winter, flat roofing, TPO roofing, and sloped roofing is the most common, along with metal roofing.

Flat Roofs + TPO Roofing

The two flat system roofs that can be replaced during the winter season is flat roofing and TPO roofing systems. Why? These two roofing systems are mechanically installed and the seams are hot air welded compared to adhesives.

Sloped Roofing

Sloped roofing systems are capable of being replaced during the winter because they are mostly used with asphalt shingles. Asphalt shingles can be put on during any weather condition, especially cold and snowy. Ice formations should be watched during this time.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing systems can be installed during any time or condition of the year without compromising its quality. Since the cold doesn’t affect metal roofs because they won’t crack, but they will expand and contract because that’s how they are designed to work.

Hint: Using an underlayment or moisture prevention can improve your roofing system to last longer, and last longer during the cold weather season.
